While any day can be a relaxing day at Hand & Stone, the official National Relaxation Day is observed annually on August 15th. It is time to slow down, unwind and relax! Sean Moeller founded National Relaxation Day in 1985 as a fourth-grader. In an interview in The Des Moines Register, Sean suggested people shouldn’t do anything of real value on that day. He made special mention that cleaning and real work are not part of relaxation.

Little did Sean know how important RELAXATION truly is! According to Sarah Jones, one of the world’s leading authors on mindfulness and stress, “There is something called the relaxation response, which is a state of deep changes to our physical and emotional responses to stress. With relaxation, we are able to reduce the stress that we feel, which will then counteract the effects of stress like anxiety.”

She adds, “The relaxation response will also help to lower your blood pressure, improve blood circulation; lower your heart rate and more. It will also give you a better sense of well-being. However, triggering the relaxation response is not always that easy, but there are proven ways that you can relax and fight the effects of stress.”

Some tips she provides include:

• Buy some house plants to help purify the air
• Avoid TV and the computer before bed
• Listen to classical music – Marconi’s “Weightless” is thought by many to be the most relaxing song
• Drink Green Tea which contains L-theanine which has been shown to reduce stress levels
• Laughter
• Exercise

Of course we want to benefit from the positive effects that massage has on relaxation. According to researchers at the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), massage eases fear, anticipation and worry by lowering adrenalin rushes and increased blood pressure brought on by stress.
