Hand & Stone Celebrates Stellar Franchise and Sales Growth in 2014
Massage Franchise Rings in 10-Year Anniversary with More than 50 Openings this Year
HAMILTON, N.J. — Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa (“Hand & Stone”), celebrated its 10-year anniversary this month and is targeting another key milestone of opening its 200th location by years end.
The brand began 2014 with 143 spa locations and has opened another 33 units year-to-date, with another 24 spas scheduled to open by the end of the year. Hand & Stone is projected to reach $130 million in system wide sales for the full year, up from $90 million in 2013, fueled by strong comparable store sales and new unit growth.
Hand & Stone has grown well beyond its East Coast strongholds of Philadelphia and New York, each of which has more than 30 spas, and opened new franchised units in key growth markets like Houston, Dallas, Chicago, Denver, southern California and South Florida. The brand’s projected performance in 2014 would indicate solid momentum carried over from its record-growth year of 2013, in which same-store sales at spas open at least 24 months rose more than 25 percent for the full year.
President and CEO Todd Leff attributes this rapid expansion to Hand & Stone’s emphasis on customer service, as well as its affordable month-to-month Lifestyle Program, which affords clients the ability to add regular massages to their lifestyles at a price that can fit within their budgets.
“Before Hand & Stone made inroads into offering spa services to the middle market, many people perceived services like ours as an indulgence,” Leff said. “But now that we can offer the same therapeutic services that customers received at day spas, at a far lower cost and more conveniently people can see that adding a regular massage or facial has a real benefit to their health and everyday sense of well-being. ”
Hand & Stone’s Founder and Chief Operating Officer John Marco launched the brand in 2004 with a mission to bring massage therapy and quality facial services to the masses, affordably and conveniently. Marco applied his 20 prior years of experience as a physical therapist to the brand, and in the 10 years since Hand & Stone has hired thousands of massage therapists and estheticians.
