Kay Hechler, of Silver Spring, at her new store, Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa in the Kentlands.
Going to the spa for a massage or facial might be a rare indulgence for some, but for Kay Hechler, it is an essential part of her longterm recovery from breast cancer.
An 11-year survivor, Hechler said she relied on regular massages to aid her physical and mental recovery in the wake of many cancer treatments and surgeries. Receiving massages has allowed her to continue living an active lifestyle.
“I’m an active person. I’m a swimmer, a golfer, I work in the garden,” she said. “I want to keep moving. I want to live. I could not be doing what I’m doing today without massage.”
It’s one of the reasons why the Silver Spring woman and her husband, John M. Phillips, are planning to open a new location of Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa in the Kentlands in a few weeks. The spa offers a variety of facials and massages, including a signature hot stone massage, as well as hair removal and other skin care services.
“We really like the company because of its commitment to wellness,” Hechler said. “It’s wellness on an affordable basis and something that people should build into their routine.”
Hand & Stone is a 160-plus unit massage and facial spa chain that was launched in 2004. It now has locations in 21 states and Canada.
Memberships can be purchased for $59.95 per month and have no yearly contract, Hechler said. The monthly rate allows the customer to receive either a massage or a facial, and gives them the ability to purchase additional services and products at a discounted price.
Customers can also receive services without a membership, but they will be charged full value, Hechler said. Appointments are recommended but not required.
After working for almost 30 years in publishing — most recently at the United States Institute of Peace — Hechler decided she wanted a change of pace.
“I turned 50 last year and I just decided that if I want to make any kind of career change, that would be a good time in my life to do that,” she said. “I have been [working in publishing] for a long time and I love it, but I wanted to work in an environment where you could go home everyday and hope that you made people immediately feel better.”
The couple chose the Kentlands location — 217 Kentlands Blvd. to be exact — because of the dynamic neighborhood and friendly business atmosphere.
“Kentlands is a phenomenal opportunity because I think it’s a lovely neighborhood community,” Hechler said. “The business community has been really warm and embracing.”
Hechler hopes customers will come to view the spa as an “oasis away from the stresses of their lives.”
“I hope they leave feeling that they have really been taken care of,” she said. “I hope they’ll think it felt pampering and healing for whatever reasons they came in.”
